Kangana Ranaut Faces Death Threats Over “Emergency” Film

Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has once again found herself at the center of a heated controversy, this time due to her upcoming film Emergency. The film, slated for release on September 6, features Ranaut in the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, a portrayal that has sparked significant backlash. In recent days, the situation has escalated to the point where Ranaut has received death threats from extremist groups, particularly from factions within the Sikh community, following the release of the film’s trailer on social media.

In a video circulated online, an individual named Vicky Thomas Singh, a Christian-turned-Nihang Sikh, issued veiled threats that alluded to the assassination of Indira Gandhi, whom Kangana Ranaut is set to portray. These threats have led Ranaut to seek the intervention of law enforcement. She has reportedly approached the authorities in Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab, urging them to take these threats seriously and to ensure her safety as the release date of the film approaches.

The controversy surrounding “Emergency” doesn’t stop at death threats. Several Sikh organizations have voiced strong objections to the film, arguing that it misrepresents their community. These groups, including the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, have expressed concerns that the film may depict the entire Sikh community in a negative light. Their concerns are particularly sensitive given the historical context of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and Operation Blue Star, events deeply rooted in the period of Emergency in India. The portrayal of figures like Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who has been declared a martyr by some factions within the Sikh community, has further inflamed sentiments.
